First World War collection

Tobacco, especially cigarettes were popular, maybe even essential for men in the trenches. The Princess Mary Christmas Fund 1914 presented each soldier with a box containing tobacco and cigarettes. Cigarette cases reflected events in the war, such as Corporal Holmes bringing a wounded comrade from no man's land. He was awarded the VC. Women took on new roles formerly done by men.
